Discover the common causes of yellow teeth

Flawless white teeth are something that is not very common; as such, there are several persons (including actors and models) who are now opting for teeth whitening methods. The natural color of teeth is not pure white, but is actually a slight yellow color; furthermore, the yellowness of one’s teeth will vary from individual to individual. Yellow teeth can be caused by internal or external factors, some of which are listed below.

Common causes of yellow teeth include:

  • Poor Dental Hygiene – The primary cause of yellow teeth is the lack of proper dental hygiene. There are several persons (including both adults and children) who will brush their teeth in the mornings, but will not do so before going to bed at nights. If you want to maintain your white teeth, you will have to brush your teeth at least twice daily and floss after eating. Brushing and flossing are vital for eliminating stain-producing substances and plaque; additionally, they help to fight tooth decay and bad breath.
  • Genetics – If you have noticed that you have had yellow teeth ever since you were a child, the cause of this could be based on genetics. In order to get whiter teeth, you should talk to your dentist about natural ways in which you can whiten them. Genetic factors that result in the weak structure of teeth from birth are also known to cause yellow teeth. Examples of a weak tooth structure are an ill-formed dentin or enamel.
  • Beverages and Food – The white enamel of your teeth can be removed by drinking too much soda pop. Likewise, eating too much sugar (such as sweetened juices, desserts and chocolate) can also cause yellow teeth by removing the white enamel. Coffee is actually the number one beverage that causes teeth to become yellow. Those persons who drink excessive amounts of coffee and tea generally have yellower teeth than those who do not drink these beverages.
  • Diseases – A disease that affects the dentin or enamel can result in yellow teeth, and there are actually a number of diseases that can cause your teeth to become discolored. There are times when treatments such as radiation therapy and chemotherapy can cause teeth to become yellow. Additionally, pregnant women should take very good care of themselves, as there are some types of infections during pregnancy that can result in infant tooth discoloration.

Tobacco and Alcohol – The nicotine that is present in cigarettes will result in teeth discoloration. After a period of time, yellow teeth that are caused by smoking may become black. Additionally, drinking excessive amounts of alcohol can also cause your teeth to become yellow.
